Chapter 29
At first there was an uncomfortable silence in the truck. Dex tried to hide his reaction after Briar changed clothes. He wouldnât say it aloud, but she looked incredible. Her snug jeans were tucked into a pair of boots with just a small bit of heel, stopping somewhere in the middle of her calves. Her light blue sweater was paired with a checkered scarf of various shades of brown and tan, matching her boots, giving her a classic and chic appearance.
For some reason, Dex found her hair to be even lighter and her eyes that much greener.
Thankfully, he was driving; had he not been, it would be difficult for him to take his eyes off her.
âYou can change the station,â Dex said, breaking the silence.
âItâs okay. I donât mind.â Dexâs rock had grown on her.
âNot exactly Dylan,â he added.
She chuckled and picked at one of her plain and unpainted nails. âNo, definitely not.â
Dex had a feeling that surprising Briar had taken her off guard. She had a nervous energy about her. Attempting to keep the conversation going, âI thought youâd be into all those pop princess drama queens, the ones writing all those screwed up songs about their ex. Or maybe boy bands?â
âNo to both,â Briar answered, her words slightly clipped. Of course Dex would think sheâd have the musical tastes of a thirteen-year-old girl. âHe was my motherâs favorite. She listened to him all the time, especially in the kitchen. For a while after she died, I couldnât listen to his music without tumbling into a fit of tears.â
When she paused, Dex looked over briefly to make sure she wasnât crying. She wasnât. Instead, she had a soft, barely there, smile on her face. âAnd now?â
âI canât say that I donât think about her when I hear his music, but the pain isnât there anymore. I have happy memories with her, and thatâs enough. Also, I really like Bob Dylan,â Briar added with a laugh.
Dex didnât say much more about her mother, and Briar took the comfortableness between them as a way to pry. Overall, Dex knew more about her than anyone; after all, he was the only person she had ever told about Leo, aside from Portia.
Knowing not to tread in the area of Dexâs mother, âWere you and your father close?â He had only spoken a little of his father at their lunch long ago.
âVery,â was all Dex said to that question.
Briar took his one-word response to mean that he didnât want to talk about it. Sadly, she decided to drop the conversation of all their dead parents.
Upon glancing at the time on the dashboard, Briar noticed that they had been driving for over forty-five minutes, and were now well out of Argent Falls.
Curiously, âWhere exactly are we going? And how much longer isââ
âJust this shop, and about thirty more minutes,â Dex answered vaguely, attempting to play it down.
Briar gasped. âWeâre driving for more than an hour for a shop?â
âSomething like that,â Dex answered with a slight chuckle in his voice.
